Introducing Morrow Long, our July On-The-Go with Jonathan Paul Travel Correspondent.

Congrats on being our first official travel correspondent! As you know, our On-The-Go with Jonathan Paul campaign is all about celebrating the get up and go lifestyle, whether a quick trip down your local back roads or a jet setting adventure to the other side of the globe. First, let’s get to know you a bit. Tell us about yourself!

My name is Morrow Long.  I come from the great state of Connecticut, Hamden to be exact.

I’m the father of three—Ben 31, Ethan 29 and Michaela 23—and I’ve been married to my devoted spouse Amy for 33 years!

I’ve also worked for the past 33 years at Yale University in IT and cybersecurity.  Before that I worked at ITT’s Advanced Technology Lab and at a “start up” developing applications for Wall Street.  These days I’m also on the cybersecurity program faculty at three local Universities.

I enjoy many outdoor activities including hiking, biking (mountain and road), inline skating, skiing (downhill and cross country) as well as sea kayaking on Long Island Sound.

I’ve hiked all of the long distance trails in Connecticut as well as most of the short ones as well—in 2009-2010 I hiked 1,000 miles in Connecticut.  Recently I’ve hiked the New England National Scenic Trail as well as Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts and New York states and sections in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Where was your last trip?

We just went whitewater tubing on the Satan’s Kingdom section of Connecticut’s Farmington River!

Last August my sister Lisa invited me on a guided hiking trip in New Hampshire’s White Mountains with her and my nephew Daniel.  We spent the first day climbing Mount Washington via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and the next day traversing Mountains Monroe, Eisenhower, and Pierce on the AT in the Presidential Range.

We had an REI guide and stayed in Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) huts.

What’s on the calendar for this summer?

We’ll be making many weekend road-trips around New England. We’ve got a weekend in Maryland this weekend with family and friends.

Ok, the floor is yours, what tips, tricks, trip reviews, or general travel-related content do you want to share with our audience?

Before going on a hike or other outdoor activity on a very hot summer day, remember to put water bottles in the freezer the night before.

The day of the hike you can then take the frozen water bottles with you in your back pack or dry bag and have refreshing, cold, icy drinking water all day long as the ice in the bottles melts gradually throughout the day!

You can even mix in (zero calorie) flavor concentrates beforehand if you want something a bit sweeter and tastier than water.

On The Importance Of Sun Protection:

Improvisation at it’s finest. After a bad sunburn on his hands, an extra pair of socks provides some cover while photographing a “mekoro” at the Pom Pom Camp in Botswana.

As I’ve gotten on in life, I’ve become more responsible and now have regular frequent eye exams where my ophthalmologist gives more warnings about cataracts and glaucoma.

With my active and year-round activities on the snow, beach and seas I’ve realized how I need to protect my eyes from the sun — I always now use sunglasses for eye protection whenever I’m outdoors.

They also help cut down on the glare, particularly when driving to or from an adventure.
